A stacking chair for the sanctuary of the Cathedral adds to the family of furniture that includes the pews, lectern & Cathedra. The curved profile of the pew gable, influenced by the cantilevered form of the building, provides a starting point for a shared language.
The challenge in the design was to resolve the curved back elegantly with materials and processes available to us locally. Since we could not source veneer, we developed a kerf-cut shape made strong by a 1mm skin that we are able to cut ourselves. The form of the piece and its resolution technically informed each other through a series of models, 1.1 details and full prototypes. 40 pieces of the final chair were produced for the Cathedral.STACKING CHAIR
